Sheena & Hylton

"I love you because the entire universe conspired to help me find you."- "The Alchemist" Paulo Coelho

As both of us attended high schools in the Upper Highway area, there must have been many times Hylton and I narrowly missed crossing one another's paths as teens. In adulthood we were drawn to different universities, provinces and countries and just when it may have seemed most impossible, we connected. Cynics will say it was only tinder, romantics will say it was fate. Ours has been a thoroughly modern romance and thanks to extensive use of smartphones and aeroplanes, we managed to bridge the distance between Durban and Capetown (or Zambia or Senegal or where ever Hylt may have been that week.)

Two years after we began dating, Hylt proposed in front of a waterfall nestled in the Drakensburg mountains. I could not have asked for a more beautiful start to our engagement.

We visited lots of wedding venues and our wedding seemed like a far off distant thing. However after visiting Bellwood and walking through the Forest Chapel it suddenly felt very real and Hylt and I were able to visualise our wedding there. It was a magical goose bump moment. And many more magical goose bump moments were had - on the day of our wedding an unseasonal storm loomed but I was determined to carry on with our forest ceremony. We heard rumbles of thunder during the ceremony which intermingled with the sound of the bagpipes but the rain held till just after the “I do’s” and we were gifted with the most spectacular double rainbow after the rain subsided. Bellwood’s staff handled all the changes that the weather demanded on the day with ease and professionalism. They say rain on your wedding day is a sign of good luck so I think a double rainbow on our wedding day makes us doubly lucky.

Things I would recommend to future brides:

  1. We had a photo booth which was a hit with the guests- it is not a wasted expense.
  2. Make time for yourself. You don’t want to be running around the week before your wedding organising everyone else and then feeling exhausted by the time the big day arrives.
  3. You will want to dance and celebrate the night away- have some flat fun shoes that you can wear once the dancing starts.
